ProjectAR
Support
For a question, a problem or a scene that doesn’t show up right, email danialsarfraz2000@gmail.com. Please include your iPhone or iPad model, its iOS version and the ProjectAR version from Settings › About, and if Blender is involved, your Blender and add-on versions. A screenshot helps too.
Getting started
- Install the add-on. Download the ProjectAR add-on and install it in Blender 4.2 or later, on Windows, macOS or Linux.
- Start the server. In the 3D Viewport, press N, open the ProjectAR tab and press Start Server.
- Join the same network. Keep your iPhone or iPad and your computer on the same Wi-Fi. If asked, allow ProjectAR to find devices on your local network.
- Connect and place. In ProjectAR, tap Connect on the Home screen and choose your computer. Then aim at the floor, a table or a wall and tap to place your scene.
If your computer doesn’t appear, enter the address shown in Blender’s ProjectAR panel under Manual in the connection sheet. The default port is 51515.
Requirements
- Add-on: Blender 4.2 or newer, tested on 5.2 LTS, on Windows, macOS or Linux. No extra Python packages; the Bonjour libraries ship as wheels.
- App: ProjectAR on an iPhone or iPad with iOS 17 or later. A LiDAR Scanner is optional: it adds room scans, lets real furniture hide parts of a model and finds surfaces faster.
- Network: Computer and phone on the same Wi-Fi or LAN, without client isolation
Your own models
You don’t need Blender to use ProjectAR. Import a model in the Library, open it from Files, Mail or AirDrop, or drag it into ProjectAR on iPad.
- USDZ and Reality files, with their materials and textures.
- GLB (binary glTF), with its materials and embedded textures. A .gltf file must have its data embedded; if it uses separate .bin or image files, export it as GLB instead.
- OBJ. Materials load only if the matching .mtl file is in the same folder. One OBJ unit is one meter.
Export with real-world units so models appear at the right size.
Network and firewall
- Windows: When Windows Defender Firewall asks, allow Blender on Private networks. If your Wi-Fi profile is set to Public, change it to Private.
- Windows: There is no need to install Apple Bonjour; discovery is built in.
- macOS: Allow Blender to find devices on your local network when asked. You can change this later in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.
- Linux: If you use a firewall such as
ufw, open TCP 51515 and UDP 5353 (mDNS). - Guest networks and many office or university networks block device-to-device traffic. A home router or a phone hotspot works reliably.
- If discovery fails, enter the computer’s IP address in the app; the panel lists every address it listens on.
Troubleshooting
- Could not open port. Another program or a second Blender is using it. Choose a different port in Settings and enter it in the app.
- The app never finds the computer. Usually the firewall or the network. Try a manual IP first to tell discovery problems from connection problems.
- Connected, but nothing appears. Tap a surface to place the scene. Check that objects are visible in the view layer, that the stream isn’t limited to an empty selection, and that updates aren’t paused. Then press Resync.
- The model is far from where I tapped. It is far from the world origin. Set AR Origin to 3D Cursor and snap the cursor to the model.
- Wrong colors. Only unlinked Principled BSDF values are read; a textured Base Color uses the material’s viewport display color.
- Local Network access was declined. Without it, the app can’t see your computer. Turn it on in the Settings app under Privacy & Security › Local Network › ProjectAR, then try again.
- The scene is slow or the app closes. Settings › Performance in ProjectAR suggests a scene size for your device. In Blender, stream only the selection or one collection, or lower the triangle budget. Battery Saver in ProjectAR’s settings also helps.
Report a problem
Problems with the Blender add-on can also be reported on GitHub, where you can see whether someone has reported them already. The add-on page has the newest version and what changed in each one.
