Common questions
How far back does Almanac go?
From 10,000 BC to AD 3000. Some calendars start later: Chinese dates go back to 4713 BC, which is as far as they can be reckoned.
Why does the Islamic date differ by a day from my local calendar?
Almanac uses the tabular (civil) Islamic calendar. Months that begin with an actual sighting of the new crescent can start a day or two apart, depending on where you are.
Which correlation does Almanac use for the Maya calendar?
The GMT correlation, 584283, in which the Long Count 13.0.0.0.0 fell on 21 December 2012.
Why do dates before 1582 look unfamiliar?
Older dates are shown in the Gregorian and Julian calendars extended backwards (proleptic), so any two days can be compared directly.
How accurate are the alignments?
Each alignment comes from published research. Tap “Show the math” on any alignment to see its bearing, horizon height, tolerance and source. The sun and moon are calculated after Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms.
The compass points the wrong way.
Move away from metal and magnets, then turn your iPhone slowly in a figure of eight to recalibrate it. To correct for magnetic declination, turn on Personalize → Use true north, which needs your approximate location.
I’m not getting reminders.
Check that notifications are allowed for Almanac in the iOS Settings app (Settings → Notifications → Almanac), and that the reminders are on in Personalize. Reminders are only sent for sites you follow; tap the bell on a site to follow it.
How do I add a widget?
Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget, and search for Almanac. Touch and hold a widget, then tap Edit Widget to choose its calendar or site.
Does Almanac need the internet?
No. Everything is calculated on your iPhone, and the app has no account.
